Ugh. Me not understand how bunch of toxic people manage to seek out a substack just to leave shitty comments.

Anyway, me sure this will be big hit solely on "remember this guy?!?" factor, but as someone who A) is a boy, and B) stayed with MCU as recently as Marvels, me have zero interest in this one. Smirking deconstruction was clever in 90s and got old pretty quickly. Me will take movie like Casino Royale — that takes fully-deconstructed character and than reassembles it into better version — than movie that trying to spoof thing while also being that thing.

Very nice article, thanks for writing insightful things about this movie that I will probably never watch. I am always puzzled by people who can't fathom that one actually thinks about these movies... So I join Cookie Monster in their astonishment. I wich you could remove the haters' comments, though your answers so some of them are pretty priceless 😁

I would say a lot of the hate for this movie is more because you weren't the right audience for it what so ever. You keep complaining about how the movie isn't observational and it is too meta for it's own good but there is two reasons for these two things.

With a movie like this, there is always going to more of a fast plot. Because unlike other MCU movies this is almost the equivalent of a "filler". It's supposed to be a fun watch and not necessarily a chronologically changing one, especially due to a rated R rating. It's a little ridiculous to criticize the movie for making fun of the multiverse concepts and marvel being on a low-point because they can't really back out of it now. We are 5 years in deep.

Like I said, the reason the movie isn't the most observational is because of the more unserious factor of deadpool. There is some more emotional scenes with Wolverine due to his character. Also talking about how you disliked Logan and Deadpool before this movie and went into it wanting something different from those two movies is ridiculous. It did all the characters how they should've been. Accurate to the comics, movies, and even the roles.

Lastly, the movie is a big subversion yes. But it is not only that. A lot of fun moments are just to be had especially if you don't watch the movie immediately after again. The jokes are creative and cunning almost 100% of the time and hit the line for a deadpool movie. Compared to some of the comedy in recent projects like She-Hulk and the recent AntMan movie, they did absolutely fantastic with this.

I think I would like to read your review with spoilers! Would like your take on some of the female characters. I've watched Iron Man (2008) and Captain America (2011) at least 10 times each. I got invested. I got emo. I got schooled.

I've watched MoM half a time. No emo.

No emo for D&W - nothing at stake. Even the one-on-one fights. Both are indestructible at that level of violence so there's nothing at risk. Blade goes in bottom or crotch - haha, smile and move on. Multiversed nerds (comics, movies, TV, industry pages, celebrity pages) feel seen because they "get it", they're in the tent. Like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Reviewers who got all the industry references loved it because it made them feel like their time was well spent.

I laughed several times but at them - not with them (like for Iron Man). It is a cheaply clever film which I will see one more time max.

When it comes to the female characters, I'm mostly just annoyed that the first movie created such a great one in Morena Baccarin's Vanessa and then neither of the sequels have known what to do with her!

Love this observation - yes, they seemed to evolve her in the Hollywood (but not necessarily MCU) default of softening ("mommy-fying") a truly smart and forthright female character (which was needed in DP1), in DP2 by her quiet manner of revealing she wanted a child (even the fluffy sweater she wore when shot), and in D&W as kindly and empathetic as I've ever seen someone who's moved on, acting toward their ex. Complex evolves to simple. A bit patronising. Maybe a wasted opportunity. But MCU women tend to evolve the other way so....maybe....

I see you're more into sniffing your own farts than understanding what 99% of the population really enjoys and wants to see. Carry on.

Well you could try pretending to be smart too, it might help your current state.

To be honest, there are times I wish I knew less about the MCU, Matt Damon. But, alas, being deep enough in to have opinions about Iron Fist S2 is my cross to bear.

I will always have a place in my heart for Iron Fist as it was these reviews that made me discover you, Caroline. Much empathy for you about the related trauma 😬

The movie has its flaws for sure, but everyone in the cinema I attended was laughing, I personally thought the action scenes were some of the more inventive ones in the MCU currently. The story was bland, the setpieces were all very inconsequential, the nostalgia bait wasn't really doing anything for me since I never really liked superhero movies as a kid, but I still think I got my $15 worth out of seeing it in a theatre.

It's kind of weird to try and eek out any sort of greater meaning or artistic flair from any superhero movie or especially any MCU movie. Personally all the issues you have with Deadpool and Wolverine are all flaws that I can easily find in earlier MCU movies and especially Warner/Fox/Sony superhero movies too. You get what you pay for, it definitely feels more gratuitous and obnoxious now but I felt the same way whenever Joss Whedon was nudging me in the shoulder saying "eh... EH" whenever an "Easter Egg" popped up in a Captain America or Thor movie.

It sounds like our reactions to the movie were super similar! Some fun high points and much to delight the fans, but a lot of stuff that didn't work as well (even if what exactly didn't work for us differed). Glad we're in agreement and that you had fun seeing the movie!
